Winter is here and the cold weather, low humidity levels and dry air play havoc with your skin making it look dull and scaly. The trick is to keep not just hydrated and moisturised, but also ensure that you seal in the moisture to avoid any damage to your skin.

1. Avoid using hot water

While a long hot shower is always welcome in the winter to soothe the skin, but in reality it is actually sapping your skin from the natural moisturising. Instead opt for lukewarm water for a shower, especially when you washing your face and hands. Lukewarm water does not strip your skin from its natural oils.

2. Moisturise your skin

Use a nourishing body oil or a moisturiser immediately after you have washed your face or have had a shower. This helps to lock in the moisturising properties and it keeps your skin hydrated for a really long time. When you use a body oil, you can also use it in the shower when your skin is a little wet to let it absorb better. Moisturise after every wash!

3. Go chemical free

Some over-the-counter moisturizers can have petroleum-based ingredients that not just dries up your skin but can also damage the skin. Opt for products that contain natural and nourishing ingredients that are good for your skin. Skin experts recommend an oil-based solution rather than a water-based solution in the winters and especially if you have dry skin because it helps to retain the moisture better. Products with natural ingredients like lavender, chamomile and jojoba can help your skin breathe.

4. Stay hydrated

Winter is one season when we tend to consume less water. Add a lot of liquids to your diet. You can opt for warm tea or warm detox drinks that can help to nit just flush out the toxins from your body but also keep it hydrated. Start your day with a glass of lukewarm water and a drizzle of lemon juice in it.

5. Eat right!

It is important to eat and drink right in the winter as this keeps your body hydrated. Eating foods high in water content can help hydrate your skin for a longer time. Opt for fresh fruits like apples, oranges and melons. In veggies, opt for  tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and carrots. Oranges are rich in Vitamin C and they are known to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. Include fruits and vegetables that will promote healthy skin.

6. Exfoliate

It is important to exfoliate the skin all year round. Yes, the skin will get dry when you exfoliate but when you follow it up with a nourishing moisturiser, your skin will start looking radiant. Dead cells accumulate all year round and winter is no exception. Choose a mild exfoliating cream and apply on the areas that have dead skin. Massage gently and let it stay for a minute or two and wash off with luke warm water.

7. Hydrate your skin overnight

Use an intense moisturising cream on the drier areas of your body like the elbows and knees to ensure that it receives maximum hydration. A hydrating nourishing cream and a natural lip balm should be a part of your night skin care regime in the winters.
