Wear the right colours


Did you know that the colours we wear actually give out signals about our current mental and intellectual state of mind? Have you ever thought about this possibility? There are several factors that come into play with our clothing choices – cut, fit, fabric and colour. The colour is the one major factor that leaves a maximum impact on the wearer as well as the observer. Remember the times you referred to a stranger as the “man with the blue shirt” or the “girl with the green skirt“.

Colour stays on in our memories and it is the first thing one considers when deciding what to wear. According to colour therapy, all colours have different energy levels which are related to the internal energies of different parts of the body. Colour therapists use coloured clothes to heal, believing that the energy from the colour will be transferred to the patient’s body and correct the existing imbalances. Similarly the clothes you wear on a daily basis will affect your mood, as your body absorbs the energy of that particular colour.

What colour do you wear?

Black is technically the absence of colour and it absorbs light. Black is known to indicate power and can also be slightly intimidating. Did you know that wearing black can make you appear authoritative and responsible? On the other hand, it is a colour that doesn’t stand out on its own and aids conformance, making it perfect for blending in.

Blue represents soothing and calming properties. Our ancestors considered a bright blue sky as a sign of clear weather, associated with positivity and calm. Being opposite to red on the colour wheel, blue has a contrary effect – it lowers one’s blood pressure.

Grey is considered to be gloomy and dreary, often denoting a lack of energy and enthusiasm. Remember the phase dreary grey skies that have been often written in books depicting a dull and gloomy weather? Wearing grey may also cause tendencies towards depression. If you do want to wear it, balance it with a bright and cheerful colour.

Green depicts the nature and has a calming and soothing effect, just like the blue colour. It denotes newness, and is also the colour of spring and new plants. Wearing green is known to refresh and boost productivity and performance skills. Green is also easy on the eye and is widely used in surgeons’ scrubs.

Orange is not as intense as red, but it is known to be a strong colour. Wearing orange is known to stimulate creativity and enthusiasm.

Pink has a pacifying nature, just like blue and green and you’ll find it commonly used in baby clothes. Did you know that pinks aids in resolving conflicts? Some prisons have also introduced pink uniforms to reduce aggression among prisoners.

Red is a strong colour that denotes power and confidence. It also helps to attract attention and is a colour that denotes passion and sexuality. Since it is a very strong colour, most people avoid wearing this colour, unless it is to attract attention.

Violet is considered a royal colour and it is also associated with spirituality and intuition. Violet also helps to think rationally and it can be worn on days when there is some decision making to be done. Lavender, a shade of violet has anxiety relieving properties, similar to the herb.

White reflects all the colours of the visible spectrum, due to which it offers the most contrast when paired with any other colour. White symbolizes peace and purity and makes the wearer feel cool and composed.

Yellow is the epitome of cheerfulness and immediately lifts one’s spirits. It helps the wearer feel more open towards others and also enhances concentration.

The next time you have a peek in the wardrobe, set aside a bunch of favourites that you may want to wear according to the mood you want to achieve. When a person uses colours suited to his/her individual personality, he/she experiences a feeling of peace and stability.
