Marma Therapy

Marma therapy is the oldest form of reflexology that originated in India. It has its roots in Kerala, a State in the Southern part of India and was associated with a local martial arts called Kalaripayattu. This form of martial arts has been used since the ancient times when the warriors used to defend the kingdom in a hand-to-hand combat. Excelling in this combat was the mark of a great warrior. These warriors used their knowledge through the hand-to-hand combat to disable or kill an opponent. “Marma” comes from the Sanskrit “Mru”, which means “To Kill”.  Interestingly, while the warriors used this art as a defence technique, the physicians used the same points to heal an injured warrior.

What are the Marma points?

Did you know that there are 107 points in the body which are considered to be access points to body, mind and consciousness? Marma points are not just a connection of tissue and fluids, they are points of the vital life force in one’s body. When there is an imbalance within the body that restricts the free-flowing movement of energy in the body, it results in a stagnation that further gives rise to various physical discomforts and illness.

How does the marma massage help?

Marma massages are used as a form of preventive medicine. Ancient Ayurveda texts describe how marma massages have been used to allow the body to function normally. When done the right way, the massage using the marma technique can isolate and clean the marma points by increasing the blood flow so that the body can function normally. It also helps your body to relax and rejuvenate when the massage is done the right way.

When we touch Marma points we stimulate the body’s biochemistry to produce exactly what the body needs to help heal the mind, consciousness and the body.

What happens during the marma massage?

The whole purpose of a marma massage is to cleanse the body of blocked energies ( also known as chi) by pacifying the different doshas in the body. Each of the marma points are known to have receptors that align with the doshas and during the massage, each of marma points are stroked in a specific sequence.

A marma massage is a full body massage that uses specific essential oils that are infused with warm and medicated oils. Depending on the constitution and the prevalent doshas present in the body there are different types of oils that is selected for the massage. Soft and flowing strokes are used in the massage that helps to stimulate the blocked energies and thus help the prana follow freely within the body. When the blocked energies are removed, it helps one to relax and promotes the physical and psychological relaxation.
