Make your home smell wonderful

Did you know that even homes are filled with toxins that we are not aware of? Most of us will perpetually have odours in our house and and we choose to cover these up with expensive sprays and plug ins that are filled with toxins. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a natural and a lasting fragrance in you home that is free from chemicals and nasties?

These easy to make recipes will ensure that each room in your home will emit a wonderful and lasting fragrances that will pep you energy levels!

DIY Recipe 1 – Make your own room fresheners

What you need:

  • A bottle with a spray nozzle (200 ml)
  • A pan with warm water
  • Essential oils

Making the room freshener

Fill the spray bottle with water leaving approximately 1 inch from the top. Add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oils and and shake the bottle for a minute to let the oils blend in with the water. You can add or reduce the amount of essential oils in the bottle depending on your liking. We’ve listed some combinations that you would like to try:

  • Relaxation blend: Lavender and Rose¬
  • Refreshing blend: Peppermint and Basil
  • Cleansing blend : Orange and Lemon¬

DIY Recipe 2 – Make your own room deodorizer

This easy recipe to make a room deodorizer takes less than five minutes from start to finish. We also suggest that if you don’t have mason jars to make this recipe, you can use salt and pepper cellars as containers to store the deodorizer.

What you need:

  • A mason jar(s)
  • A bottle of baking powder
  • Few essential oils

Making the room deodorizer

Drill or pierce a few holes in the lid of the jar. Add roughly 4-5 tbsps of baking soda in the jar and add the essential oil or essential oils one by one. Take a thin wooden stick and mix the essential oils with the baking soda to let it blend completely. Keep this jar in a dry corner of the room and shake it at least twice a day to let the natural fragrance spread through the room. These are really fast and easy to make and you can choose a unique fragrance for each room in your home. Would it not be lovely to step in to a house of various fragrances?

Easy tips : You can use Lavender to promote a sense of calm and relaxation for your bedroom. Use the essential oils of lemon, grapefruit or orange to neutralize the cooking odours in your kitchen. You can use the essential oils of pine or peppermint in the bathrooms to rejuvenate and refresh. You can choose to mix or use only one essential oil according to the fragrances you like.

DIY Recipe 3 – Make your own potpourris

What you need:

  • Dried leaves and flowers
  • Vases and wooden bowls
  • Essential oils

Making the potpourri’s

You can choose to either buy the dried flowers and leaves from a store or if you have a garden at home, pluck a few fragrant flowers and dry them in the shade. It would take anywhere between 2-3 weeks to dry completely. Take a glass bowl or a wooden bowl and add a layer of the dried flowers and petals. You can dd a drop or two of your favourite essential oils to the potpourris. You can add different oils once a week to change the fragrance and tweak it according to your mood. Having a natural fragrance wafting from a potpourris can  give your home a wonderful scent all through the day.
