The culinary herb Ocimum basilicum, popularly known as Holy Basil or Tulsi ( in Hindi) is a plant that can be found in most Indian homes. While it is one of the major ingredients used in Italian cooking, it is also known to have medicinal properties. We’ve listed a couple for you.
Holy Basil has a lot of healing properties. Add half a teaspoon of dried or fresh basil to a glass of water and drink to calm an irritating stomach. Chewing fresh basil leaves are known to alleviate coughing and colds. For a cough that persists take a handful of fresh basil leaves and add to it half an inch of crushed ginger and three peppercorns. Boil this in a pan with a cup of water and reduce it to half the quantity. Take small sips through the day with or without honey.
Brew it with tea leaves and sip to help soothe illness and provide relief when you have a cough or cold. Did you know that inhaling basil as steam can help reduce the headache? Add a tablespoon of dried basil leaf to 2-3 cups of boiling water in a large pot. Cover you head with a towel, lean over the pot and inhale. Breathe/Inhale in the steam for 5-10 minutes until headache starts to subside.
Stressed? Add a few drops of holy basil essential oil to your bath and soak in for a couple of minutes to promote relaxation.
