With the changes in the season comes a change in your resistance. You are susceptible to cold, cough and the flu. Rather than running to a doctor have you ever thought of turning to some traditional remedies that you can make at your home? And the best part? Most of the traditional remedies can be made from herbs that are readily available at your home! In this series of traditional healing, we’ll focus on one herb and its healing properties. In our last post, we spoke of ginger and the wonderful healing properties it possessed. In today’s post, we will talk about turmeric and its various uses.
Turmeric is very native to Indian cooking. We use this spice in almost all foods that we cook, from curries, lentils to veggies. The list of benefits that this spice has is really long! Turmeric is an excellent detox for the liver and also aids in weight management. It can also be applied topically to reduce pains. It has been used as an age old remedy to be applied on wounds for faster healing. Turmeric is known to support the immune system and the digestive system. It also is beneficial to liver, heart and blood. A recent research showed that this spice is beneficial for variety of illnesses that include heart related disease, osteoarthritis, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Turmeric in hot milk
This is the ideal traditional medicine administered when one is down with a cough and cold. The healing properties of this medicine ease the congestions and allow you to breathe well, thus promoting a restful sleep.
How to make it Boil about half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in one cup of milk for about a minute. Drink this before it cools down and if you want a slight variation add a spoonful of honey.
Get rid of acne
Did you know that turmeric is a very good cure for acne and sore joints? To make a turmeric paste, mix the amount of turmeric powder you need with room temperature water and apply on the affected area. Apply just a dot of the paste on the acne prone area and let it stay for overnight if you can or about an hour or two and wash off with warm water.
Get rid of the pains and aches
For sore joints and muscles you can add dry ginger powder to the paste and apply on the affected area, leave it in for about 10 – 15 minutes and wash off with a warm water on the affected area.
Brew a cup of turmeric tea and incorporate it into your diet. Consuming this tea has its benefits and also allows you to incorporate turmeric into your daily diet. How to make it Add quarter teaspoon of turmeric powder to about two cups of water and let it simmer for ten minutes, Cool the water and drink at room temperature. You can add honey to this as a variation.
