Hand mudras of the five elements

In our previous post ,we introduced you to what hand mudras were and the benefits that were associated with the practice of the mudras.

The five elements of the body: water, earth, ether, air, and fire and Yoga mudra have a close relationship. Regular practice of these mudras can help create a balance between these five elements in the body.

Did you know that each of the fingers represent the elements? The thumb is known to represents fire, while the index finger represents air. The middle finger represents ether, the ring finger represents earth, and the little finger represents water.

In this post, we are listing the mudras that represent the five elements of the body and the individual benefits it possesses.

 The five mudras

Surya Mudra (Mudra of the Sun)

Bend your knees and take a seating position. Keep your neck and back straight. Bend your ring finger and press it with the thumb. Place both your hands on folded knees and put a little pressure in your palm and relax the rest of your hand. Practise this mudra at least twice a day for a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes each time.

Surya Mudra is known to sharpen the centre in your thyroid gland. Regular practice of this mudra is known to bring down the cholesterol levels in your body and reducing weight. It also helps to control anxiety pangs and improve the digestion.

Vayu Mudra (Mudra of the Air)

Bend your knees and take a seating position. Keep your neck and back straight. Place your index fingers at the root of your thumbs and press it with thumb. Your index finger should touch the middle finger Place your hands at folded knee so that palm is facing up and put a little pressure in your palm and relax the rest of your hand. Practice this mudra for 20-30 minutes every day.

Vayu Mudra is known to prevent all illnesses that occur due to imbalances that are present in the air. It helps control and eliminates the gastric disorders and is known to reduce the intensity of rheumatism, arthritis, joint pains, back aches and sciatica. The Vayu mudra takes a minimum of two months of continuous practice to show better results.

Prithvi Mudra (Mudra of the Earth)

Bend your knees and take a seating position. Keep your neck and back straight. Touch the tip of the ring finger to the tip of the thumb, while stretching out the other three fingers. Place your hands at folded knee so that palm is facing up and put a little pressure on joined tips and relax the rest of your hand. Practice this mudra for 20-30 minutes every day.

Prithvi Mudra is known to reduce all physical weakness and helps to reduce digestive related issues. It helps to clear the toxins from the body thus giving it a healthy glow and keeps your body healthy. This is an excellent mudra for those who want to gain weight.

Varun Mudra (Mudra of the Water)

Bend your knees and take a seating position. Keep your neck and back straight. Touch the tip of the little finger with the tip of thumb, while stretching out the other three fingers. Place your hands at folded knee so that palm is facing up and put a little pressure on joined tips and relax the rest of your hand. Practice this mudra for 20-30 minutes every day.

Varun Mudra is known to balance the water content in your body. Regular practise of this hand mudra prevents muscle shrinkage and is beneficial to keep in control blood as well as urinary related problems.

Akash Mudra (Mudra of the Sky)

Bend your knees and take a seating position. Keep your neck and back straight. Touch the tips of middle finger and thumb and keep other three fingers straight. Keep your hand on your folded knee, remember to keep palm facing upwards. Place your hands at folded knee so that palm is facing up and put a little pressure on joined tips and relax the rest of your hand. Practice this mudra for 20-30 minutes every day.

Akash Mudra is beneficial for people with heart disorders or blood pressure. Regular practise of this mudra is known to strengthen the bones and increase one’s spiritual power.
