Face Care in the monsoons

Adherence to a simple 4 step routine of cleansing, toning, moisturising and exfoliating guarantees a healthy, glowing skin

i. Cleanse

Skin requires regular cleansing in order to keep it looking fresh and healthy. With the high humidity of the monsoon weather causing excessive sweating, which in turn attracts a build-up of dust, dirt, grime and other toxins on our skin, this becomes even more imperative.Washing the impurities away from our skin allows it to breathe.Splash your face with water 3-4 times a day.

A natural mild skin cleanser with moisturising vegetable oils and therapeutic essential oils deep-cleanses your skin to remove every trace of dust and dirt without stripping it of its natural moisture.

We tend to sweat excessively during this weather aggravating our skin further. Rubbing an ice cube over washed face for 5 to 10 minutes tends to lower the perspiration rate.


After cleansing, every morning and before going to bed, applying an alcohol-free natural toner with anti-bacterial pure essential oils is absolutely essential will prevent skin infections and eruptions by;

  • Closing and tightening the pores which have been opened due to increased humidity
  • Restoring and maintaining your skin’s natural pH balance
  • Readying the skin to accept the moisturiser

iii. Moisturise

Contrary to popular belief, every type of skin needs a moisturiser in every season, (yes even in the monsoon). Excessive humidity levels make oily skin – oiler (the monsoon adds up to the moisture content) and dry skin – drier (the monsoons strip off the skins moisture content). Moreover the rains and their resulting constant wetting and drying, leads to increased dehydration.

A light formulation base natural moisturiser is best for this time of the year to prevent water loss and to re-hydrate your skin.

iv. Exfoliate

Monsoon tends to clog the skin pores which make it prone to acne and dullness. Use a gentle scrub of herbal powders (ubtan) once a day to remove dead and dry skin cellsand reveal glowing, cleansed skin.(An effective formulation for a natural scrub is a blend of red and white sandalwood and turmeric in a base of green lentil and white lentil flour)


With no sun in sight during the rains, there is a tendency to shove the sunscreen to the back of your cosmetic shelf. However a skin rule to remember is “as long as there is daylight, your skin needs protection from UVA and UVB rays”. So come rain or shine, a natural sunscreen lotion with a minimum SPF 30must be an essential part of any skin care routine. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you step out and re-apply every three to four hours.


Constantly changing temperatures and humidity levels that you are exposed to as you go indoors and out, especially extreme air conditioning gives your muscles a chill-induced spasm. A marma point massage or Ayurvedic abhyanga (massage) with warm Ayurvedic herbal oils can stimulate blood circulation, iron out knots, detoxify and induce a state of complete relaxationwhile allowing natural active ingredients to deeply penetrate the skin for maximum benefit. Follow with an ubtanwash (natural grain scrub) towork on the removal of dead skin cells and acne by cleaning the skin poresleaving the skin cells healthy and supple


Keep yourself hydrated by drinking your usual 10-12 glasses of fresh (filtered and safe) water a day. Besides hydrating the body, water also keeps it cool. Due to the high humidity levels during the rains, our sweat does not evaporate quickly, thus preventing the body from releasing heat efficiently. You may therefore not feel as thirsty as you did in the hot summers,so you require some discipline to keep your skin hydrated from the insideregardless of your thirst or activity levels. (Your skin is always thirstier than you are!)

Monsoons are a perfect time to down those herbal teas and nourishing soups. The warm drinks will help to rise the body temperature too.A glass of warm water mixed with a tea spoon of honey and half a lemon on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, flushes out accumulated toxins.
