Meditation is not the new age mantra that keeps you fit and healthy. It is an ancient technique that has long been followed to promote a sense of physical wellness as well as emotional wellness.  Meditation forms an integral part of yoga also as it helps to calm down the tired body.

Most people associate meditation with chanting of religious notes and praying, there is more to it. We’ve listed 7 reasons why you should practise mediation on a regular basis.

#1 Helps you focus – Are you a multi-tasker? Do you have too many things packed in a day? Do you don multiple roles in a day? If you answered yes, meditation is the answer for you. When you meditate, you are able to think with clarity that enables you to focus. When you focus, you are able to perform your tasks better.

#2 Keeps you happy –Meditation is known to promote a calm mind and a sense of well-being because it helps to get rid of stress and anxiety. In today’s hectic schedules it is important to lead a life that has lesser stress and anxiety levels. When your stress levels are less, you are in a happier frame of mind.

#3 Keeps you healthy – Noted point 2? When you are happy, there is a lot of positive energy in your body that keeps the negativities at bay.  A happy mind is a healthy mind. A healthy mind is a healthy body! Studied have shown that people who meditate suffer from less pain and illness.

# 4 Makes you calm – Meditation helps you control your breathing that makes you less stressed.  Did you know that when you  practice meditation daily it can promote calm and help you relax not just when you are meditating but it keeps you calm throughout the rest of the day as well.

#5 Promotes self-knowledge – People who meditate can often connect with their inner self and able to understand the understanding of the purpose of their life. Meditation also helps connect with the positive thoughts.

#6  Helps you lose weight –  Did you know that meditation is one of the ways to pay attention to all the senses you are experiencing? You can also meditate when you eat to indulge in conscious eating. When you practise meditation while you’re eating, you become more conscious of what you’re putting in your mouth.

# 7 Associates with your consciousness – Most people tend to confuse meditation with religion, but the truth is meditation is associated with consciousness. Meditation allows us to delve deeper into the heart and be associated with the inner reality and the inner thoughts.

Things to keep in mind when you are meditating

  • Sit straight when you mediate. Avoid meditating when you are lying down, because you are likely to fall asleep if you did that. When you are seated, it raises your sense of awareness.  
  • Avoid eating a meal before you meditate because with a full stomach, your body will be lethargic with digestion.
  • If being seated in the lotus posture is not comfortable, you can sit crossed leg on the ground or chair. You need to keep a straight back.
  • If you can, bathe before you meditate and light an incense stick for aromatherapy.
  • While you can meditate at any point of time, most experts feel that the right time to meditate effectively is any time after 3:00 am and before 10:00 am because the senses are alert at that time.

You need to invest time to meditate. When you clear your mind from the negativity and fill it with focus, the rest of the day more productive. After a few months you will realize that there is nothing as important as inner peace.
