Blue – Blue is the most widely accepted soothing colour. Our ancestors took the sight of a clear blue sky as a sign of fine weather with no impending storms. A well-known example of the power of blue is that in certain areas in Glasgow, where they used blue street lights and reported a reduction in crime. With the summer setting in fast, blue is also considered a ‘cooling’ colour in hot weather.
Green -Green is the colour of nature and is associated with the reassuring qualities of nature. In the ancient texts, lots of greenery indicated abundant water and food, which made it a comforting colour. Green is also considered restful, for which the eye needn’t adjust as much as for other colours.
Lavender – Violet, being at one end of the spectrum of light, is associated with spirituality and a sense of heightened awareness. Lavender, a lighter shade of violet is thus a calm and soothing colour, helping one to look inward and away from the anxieties of life.
Pink – Pink is culturally regarded as ‘feminine’ and being the colour of the womb, it is considered nurturing and protecting. It also has a tranquillizing effect, due to which prisoners in certain U.S. prisons are made to wear pink uniforms to reduce aggression and induce calm.
Brown – Brown isn’t a colour that commonly features on lists of calming colours, yet it is widely used in our lives. Brown is the colour of the earth and wood, and indicates stability and warmth. It is a colour we automatically associate with home, comfort and security, probably since humans built their first dwellings out of mud, clay or wood – all in shades of brown. The raw, unpolished versions of the most common global food staples – rice, wheat, potato – are brown. Some popular ‘comfort foods’ are also brown – tea, coffee and chocolate.
Ivory – Ivory is a shade in between white and beige. It is a soft shade, without the starkness of pristine white, while it is brighter than beige. It borrows the peace and innocence of white as well as the earthy stability of beige. Ivory is considered elegant, without being dull. It is a safe, neutral and calming colour, and probably the most common choice for interior wall paints. It is very good as a base colour and can be paired with most colours without a harsh contrast.
These colours can be used in isolation or in combinations – either way, they’re sure to provide a calming effect. Few things are as therapeutic as the sight of a lush green field against a clear blue sky or some ivory shells on a warm sandy beach. Use them in paintings, on walls, or in the form of indoor plants to generate a constant feeling of calm throughout your day.
