It is the season of festivities and most of us are, well indulging in the extra calories with the cakes, cookies and the extra yummy goodies! Not only do we need to watch the expanding waistline but also put up with the indigestion and the heartburns that are a part of the indulgence in eating. While the best thing will be to watch what you eat and of course eat healthy, we know that these are the times of making the exceptions!
When you face the moments of indigestion, thanks to the overeating, don’t pop that pill or drink a fizzy drink that will give you a momentary relief. Instead opt for these simple home remedies that will keep the indigestion at bay.
Drink some tea
Drink a cup or two of chamomile tea. This herb is one of the age old remedies to cure the heartburn and indigestion. Chamomile tea is known to calm the stomach and soothe the intestinal tract providing the much needed relief.
Ever notice the candies ginger that some restaurants serve at the end of a meal? Eat them! Ginger is known to be effective in improving the digestion and settling the upset stomach.
Rub some peppermint oil on your tummy to prevent nausea that is one of the symptoms of indigestion. Applying peppermint oil topically also helps to reduce the intestinal spasms of the muscles. You can also drink some peppermint tea to sooth the spasms and settle the upset tummy.
Ingredients in the Kitchen
Eat a spoonful of fennel (saunf) or caraway (ajwain) seeds to get rid of the indigestion. You could also boil water and add quarter a spoon of these seeds to it and let it steep for a few minutes. Drink this water to get rid of the indigestion or heartburn. Even if you do not have these seeds, just sip a cup of hot water to get rid of the indigestion.
You can also drink a glass of fresh lime juice to curb the acidity and heartburn caused due to indigestion or just add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water ( at room temperature) and drink it. The baking soda helps to neutralise the acids in the stomach and gets rid of the gas and bloating of the stomach.
