4 Ayurvedic tips for a healthy year

Boost your well-being with these 4 simple tips. These tips, when followed will ensure that you stay in the best of health.


Drink Hot Water

By drinking hot water regularly you can balance the Vata and Kapha dosha. Drinking hot water regularly will help you strengthen your digestive abilities and help in reducing any metabolic waste (Ama) that may have accumulated.

How to boil the water:

You need to boil for 10 minutes at least two litres of water that is un-chlorinated or still mineral water in a saucepan. Cool and store this boiled water either in a thermos flask or a copper jug and take few sips of this water at regular intervals all through the day. You can also consume more, but keep in mind that it is the frequency of the intake of water that is more important than the quantity of water

Ayurveda Tip:  To increase the positive effect of this water, add a few slices of ginger to boiling water. Cool and strain before storing it.

Exercise for Good Health

Exercise should be an important part of your lifestyle. It is important that you do not strain your body when you exercise. Be regular in your workouts and devote at least 30 minutes a day for 5 times in a week for your work outs.  Early mornings are a good time for you to carry out your regular workouts. Ensure that you follow a healthy diet that will provide adequate nourishment and supplements to your body.

Ayurveda Tip:  There is a limit to the amount of exercise that should be done. Overdoing and straining your body with exercises can have its own repercussions.

Daily Oil Massage

Indulge in a full body massage in the mornings before your bath. An oil massage is known to have a soothing effect on the nervous system (Vata). Regular oil massages help  to remove toxins from your body and improve the blood circulation. A massage is beneficial for your skin and you should indulge in a massage as often as you can.

Guidelines for an oil massage

Choose a comfortably warm room to carry out a massage. The massage oil needs to be warmed before application. You can warm the oil by placing it in a glass cup and immersing it in hot water or warming it in a copper vessel over a slow flame. Massage slowly and evenly using firm strokes that will allow the oil to be absorbed by your body, Ensure that the entire body is covered in a thin film of oil.

How to massage

  • Massage the head region in small circular movements for at least 5 minutes.
  • Move on to the shoulder, neck, throat, arms and the hands. Use firm strokes for relaxation.
  • Use long straight strokes to massage your hands and legs. Use circular movements to massage the joints.
  • Move on to the chest and stomach. Use gentle and slow strokes to massage this area.
  • Massage your back and the base of spine up and down with the flat of the hands.
  • Massage your feet and the soles at the end.

Ayurveda Tip:  Let the massage oil soak in your skin for at least 15 minutes before taking a bath or a shower.

Soothing Sleep

A regular uninterrupted sleep for 7 – 8 hours will do wonders for your body and mind. Not only will you be relaxed after the sleep, but you will also feel rejuvenated. Ayurveda recommends the following for people who have difficulty in sleeping:

  • Regular oil massages followed by a warm bath
  • Consuming light food in the evening and eating an early dinner
  • Use of aroma oils/ aromatherapy to relax and de-stress (use these in diffusers)

Ayurveda Tip: Each time of day has a different “quality”. The time from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. is the predominant time for Kapha dosha. It is recommend that sleeping before 10 pm helps you sleep better. The time after 10 pm is when the pitta dosha is predominant. During this time you should be resting, letting your mind relax. If one remains awake during this time chances are that the tiredness will gradually disappear and the person is unable to fall asleep till well past midnight.
