Stoneware is clay that when fired (a high-fired clay; about 2185 degrees Fahrenheit) to maturity becomes a sturdy, chip resistant material suitable that takes heat well. This is different from the earthenware (usually called "ceramics" or "ceramic ware") which is a white and porous clay fired at a low temperature (about 1915 degrees Fahrenheit) and hence not as durable.
