house_layout-guide.jpgAccording to Vaastu, the movement of energy through a 4-sided building is similar to the flow of energy across the Earth. In Vaastu Shastra, it is believed that 'prana'  or positive energy flows into the house early in the morning from the North-East direction and meanders towards the South-East and North-West corners before heading out through the South-West corner at night. Vastu shastra prescribes desirable characteristics for sites and buildings based on flow of this energy or prana. Many of the rules are attributed to cosmological considerations - the sun's path, the rotation of the earth, magnetic field, etc.

The strongest influence of Nature on earth comes from the sun. The early principles of Vastu were framed on the basis of observation of the sun rays, at different times in the day. These observations were noted and important inferences drawn later on, on the basis of an in-depth screening. As it crosses the sky it generates differing qualities of energy. Homes should be designed so that the different energies of the sun correspond to the specific function and activity in each room, and in this way natural law will support every aspect of our daily activity.

Proper placement of different rooms in a home with the differing qualities of the sun

Humans perform different activities depending on the time of the day. The ancient Vastu pundits divided the 24 hours into eight parts, representing the eight cardinal directions. They designed and oriented various rooms of a house towards the eight cardinal directions, such that at any given time of the day depending on the activity, the inmates were able to absorb the life-giving rays of the Sun, according to the position of the sun through the day.

Vaastu Shastra prescribed the following layout for a house, based on the usual human activities from morning till night.

room_layout-blocks.jpg3 AM to 6 AM: Just before sunrise is called the Brahma Muhurta and the Sun is in the North-East. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, or study as it is very quiet and peaceful. Therefore, the North-East corner is the best position for the Meditation room/Pooja room.

6 AM to 9 AM: The Sun is in the East. This is the right time for bathing and preparing for the day and so the East is logically the best position for the bathroom (not the toilet). Please bear in mind, in the olden days, the bathrooms were always outside the house, therefore this position was ideal. However in our modern day apartments and attached bathrooms cum toilets, it is not advisable.

9 AM to 12 Noon: The Sun is in the South-East and this is a good time to prepare food. Hence a Kitchen is best located in the South-east.

Noon to 3 PM: After lunch it is time for rest, so the time between noon and 3 pm is called Vishranti, the resting period. The Sun is now in the South, and hence the best position for the bedrooms

3 PM to 6 PM: After rest, is the time for studying and work, and the Sun is now in the South-West section of the house, therefore s a good position for a study or library.

6 PM to 9 PM in the evening: Is the right time for eating, sitting or reading. The Sun is in the West and this is the best location for dining or living room.

9 PM to Midnight: When the Sun is in the North-West part of the house is the time to sleep. This part is a good location for another bedroom also. In the olden days it was a good space for animals.

Midnight to 3 AM: when the Sun is in the Northern section, is the time of darkness and secrecy. The North is the best place to hide valuables and to keep them protected.

Adaptations have been made today considering our lifestyle changes. Maharishi Vedic Architecture recommends the following factors of right placement to changes ensuring every aspect of daily activity in the home or office building is in harmony with Natural Law.

Maharishi-pic.jpgHis Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced the Transcendental Meditation® program to the world 40 years ago and is now bringing the knowledge of Natural Law to every area of life, including architecture, government, health, education, defense, and management.

Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design is one of the 40 disciplines of Maharishi Vedic Science. The Sanskrit word Sthapan means to establish and Veda means knowledge of Natural Law. So Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design is the science of establishing the knowledge of harmony with nature in architecture
