What is Rasa?

Ayurveda has two main aims - one is to maintain health and the second is to cure disease. The branch of Rasayana or rejuvenation is one of the eight specialized branches of Ayurveda that primarily deals with the maintenance of health. The Sanskrit word used to describe chemistry and alchemy is also Rasayana, literally, "the ayana (path) of rasa (essence)"

Rasa has different meanings like juice, taste, essence, flavour or emotion, but is not limited to any of these in itself. In therapeutic process Rasa is concerned with the conservation, transformation, and revitalization of energy. Rasa nourishes our body, boosts immunity and helps to keep the body and mind in best of health.

That is the Rasa or the Essence. It is eternal and odourless. It is greater than the great; it has neither beginning nor end. It is the permanent, the stainless and the decay-less. -- Kundalini Upanishad.

It is thus the science and practice that deals with the essence of the universe, with the essence of the life force, or the sap of life. It arises from the premise that there is a perfect equation between the human body and the universe – that which exists in the universe can be found in the human body, and vice versa. By knowing the essence of the substance that makes up the body, the essence of the universe is also known. The wise Vedic practitioners believed that this knowledge made it possible to preserve and retain the essence of life within our bodies and thus attain youthful immortality.

It was only natural that the ancient healers turned to the plant kingdom for the answers that could bring us back into conscious harmony with our soul’s purpose.
