omved-rasa--dhoop-burner.jpg The oldest sources in the world, regarding incense are the Atharveda, Rigveda and later Ayurveda texts. Its earliest use was to cleanse the atmosphere for spiritual awakening and later therapeutically to cure health ailments and emotional disturbances.

Ayurvedic incense ingredients were blended strictly by Panchamahabhoot (the five elements) following the principle, in a way that balances the 3 Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Ether:

(Seeds and Fruits)
Star Anise, Juniper berries, Nutmeg

Water:

(Stems & Branches)
Sandalwood, Frankincense, Myrrh

Earth:

(Roots)
Orris, Vetivert, Ginger, Valerian, Jatamansi

Fire:

(flowers and buds)
Clove, Lavender, Chamomile

Air:

(leaves)
Patchouli, Bay, Rosemary, Thyme

The resulting blends, 'Dhoop' contain the vital energy that only nature can generate. Through the burning of aromatic herbs and other botanical elements, the sense of smell which bypasses the rational mind affects the more subtle layers of the human being, bringing about balance and harmony, promoting good health and well-being, enhancing the mood and creating a pleasant atmosphere.
