Bhakti: n (Sanskrit): The origin of bhakti can be traced in the Vedas wherein the root-word bhaj whose meanings include “to participate”, “partake” and “to possess” and various synonyms appear. Bhakti broadly comes to mean “devotion” or “love” to the Divine in later literature, and has been an all-pervasive concept in the philosophical and spiritual traditions of India. It emphasises the intense love and spiritual attachment of a devotee towards a personally conceived divinity as a means to moksha liberation.

The objective of life as advocated by the Sanatan Dharma (eternal truths) is to realize that atman equals Brahman. Atman is the self, and Brahman is the abstract concept referring to the principle of universality. Three paths for elevating one to this platform of spiritual consciousness seeking the absolute truth are delineated in the Vedas: karma, jnana and bhakti.

Jnana-kanda – (the path of knowledge) through rigorous austerity, asceticism, and study of Vedic texts one learns to detach altogether from the illusory influence of Maya, this path is arduously difficult.

Karma-kanda – (the path of ritual and good works) through selfless activities, and sacred rituals one can enjoy

Since Bhakti is the path of attaining supreme God through the practice of lifelong devotion, it can be done by various ways by the devotee or bhakta. There cannot be defined any fixed technique of doing this. Each way followed will result in a different type of Bhakti yoga. So there can be perhaps, as many ways or types of Bhakti yogas as there are people themselves. Some classifications have been mentioned in the ancient texts. These are:
